Tips for surviving college, no matter when you choose to go back to school

Calgary, AB - November 19, 2010 - Whether you're a recent high school graduate or an older student heading back to school after a few years in the workforce or at home raising kids, the heading back to school can be stressful. Here are some tips to help you survive and thrive at college.

College Survival Tips

  • Go to orientations and campus tours to check out the library, student lounge, and financial aid office. The faster you learn your way around campus, the less overwhelmed you'll feel.

  • Attend class. Although it may be tempting to skip, you'll wish you hadn't when it comes time for the final and you don't know the material. Besides, you're paying to get an education, so get your money's worth!

  • Create a study schedule. Review class notes every day, read assigned texts to prepare for lectures and pop quizzes, and study in a quiet environment that's free of distractions.

  • If you're juggling school with a part-time job or a family, let those around you lend a hand. If a family member offers to watch the kids while you get in some study time, take them up on it. Look to community groups that might be able to lend support while you're at school.

  • Take advantage of the study resources on campus, like tutors, learning labs, computer facilities, academic advisors, and other services that you pay for out of your tuition.

  • Get to know your professors. Drop by during office hours to ask questions about the course material, or to discuss papers and exams. Remember, your professors are the ones who'll be writing recommendations for you later.
