Wow Hiring Managers with a Strong Cover Letter

Monday, February 18, 2013

When you apply to a job, you're typically one of dozens, hundreds or even thousands of people who are going after the same role. Hiring managers might spend only mere minutes checking out your resume and cover letter, looking for buzz words that relate to the role they're trying to fill. If they don't find what they're looking for, they  move on to the next one.

Because of this, your cover letter is the key that often holds your fate of whether or not you'll land that first interview. Its top priority is properly reflecting the type of professional you are, but how you portray that can make or break your chances. Here are some tips to ensure that your application is helping you, not hindering you.

Powerful Slogan
A brief phrase or message at the top of your cover letter is optional, but can be a helpful way to lead hiring managers into your letter. The attention-grabbing sentence could tie in with the values and mission of the company to which you're applying, so it should change with every application you submit. If you're applying for medical office jobs and are unsure of whether or not a slogan is necessary, you can stick with a meaningful mission statement that demonstrates the value you'll bring to the company.

Give Strong Examples
The hardest part about writing a cover letter is trying to show your ability, rather than simply tell a recruiter why you'd be a good fit. The best way to achieve this is by providing examples from your past work experience. Have you worked in a medical setting before? Do you have experience in an administrative role
? Even unrelated job experiences can boost your chances, such as working in the food service industry. While it may not seem connected, the social skills you develop in that type of environment can help you in any work setting.

Research the Company
Not every business is going to require the same tone in a cover letter. While some professionals might be applying to advertising agencies or other creative firms and write in a more casual voice, those applying for jobs at medical offices should maintain a straightforward and professional tone throughout the letter, with a formal salutation and closing.
