Six Tips for Being Job Ready

Friday, May 7, 2021

A lot goes into reaching your career goals. No matter where you’re at, it’s important to always be job-ready. Here are six tips to follow so that you’re prepared for employment no matter what.

Frequently Update Your Resume.

It's always a good idea to refresh your resume and tailor it to the specific job you are applying for. You can do this by reviewing the job description to see what keywords are listed and include them in your resume, so a potential employer clearly knows you fit the qualifications.

Update Your LinkedIn profile

Did you know that LinkedIn comes up first in Google when someone searches your name? With over 225 million users, LinkedIn serves as your online professional network. Make sure your profile is up to date so potential employers can see how talented you are – increasing your likelihood of getting called in for an interview.

Sharpen Your Skills

Make sure you have the basic job qualifications and skills for the industry you are applying to. There are multiple ways to gain professional skills, such as taking an online course, earning a professional certificate, attending a workshop. Setting daily career goals can help you to attain these qualifications.

Choose Your References

Finding solid references can make you a stronger candidate for a potential employer.  Your chosen professional contacts don't just have to include recent employers. You can list your past instructors, group members you've worked on a project with, and people you have volunteered for. When you start your job search, it's a good idea to confirm with your references – via email or phone – to ask them if you can provide their contact information to your potential employer.

Turn On Job Alerts

Job alerts can be an effective tool to use when starting a job search. They give the advantage of becoming an early applicant so that a recruiter is more likely to reach out to you. Examples of job sites with job alerts include Glassdoor, LinkedIn, Indeed, ZipRecruiter and SimplyHired.
