REEVES COLLEGE TURNS 60 YEARS OLD

Monday, September 20, 2021

Reeves College is turning 60 years old this fall. With that, we want to highlight some of our history as well as some of our upcoming celebrations. Reeves College was founded in 1961 by Clayton Joseph (C.J.) Reeves in Lloydminster, Alberta as a professional business school. We reached out to some of the remaining Reeves family members to find out more about C.J. from his son Clinton Reeves and his wife Mary.

Reeves Family History

Originally from Saskatchewan, C.J. grew up and lived with his family on a farm north of Kerrobert. He attended a high school where he gained skills in typing and shorthand. He became the best typist in his class with an average of 75 words per minute. C.J. became an experienced secretary and instructor who developed secretarial programs to train fully train an individual to enter the workforce with exceptional skills. Above all else, C.J. loved his family, his school, and his community.

After C.J. retired, he passed the family business along to his son Clinton who managed the college with his brother in-law. In 2003, the Reeves family sold the college.

C.J. Reeves passed away in 2008. He is remembered by many as being an outspoken charismatic born leader. His wife May Reeves, though reserved, also played a large role in what Reeves College is today as she was the "connector" she was able to build relationships with anyone because of her kind and nurturing personality.

Clinton and Mary shared their mutual interest in education, as they know the difference having a quality education can make. With a passion for education, Clinton and Mary have a foundation called IamChange Education and Wellness Foundation that sponsors education for students in underprivileged areas of the Philippines. Mary shares her advocacy for education when she says “"When you're surviving it's hard to dream.", thus reiterating the importance of education.

Notable Reputation

Over the past 60 years of exceptional training, Reeves College has gained a notable reputation for educating knowledgeable business professionals who go on to work in local businesses. In the early 2000s, the college expanded to include healthcare career programs as well. Throughout the years, some of the most popular programs have been the Paralegal, Graphic Design, Addictions & Community Services Worker, and Education Assistant with thousands of graduates to prove it. This success is worth celebrating because reaching academic success and graduating is a such a rewarding milestone.

Reeves College proudly has eight campuses in Alberta: Calgary City Centre, Calgary North, Calgary South, Edmonton City Centre, Edmonton North, Lloydminster, and Lethbridge.

Celebrating 60 Years

On our 60th anniversary, we wanted to celebrate and give back to the community. So, in the beginning of September, we had a team of eager staff, volunteers, and community members plant 60 trees at Jackie Parker Park in Edmonton to commemorate the founding of Reeves College.

There are other ways that Reeves College will continue celebrating this exciting milestone, including some that you can get involved in. The first week of October commences our anniversary celebrations at all of our campuses. We would like to extend our thanks to the amazing local bakeries for baking us delicious cupcakes to share with our staff, students, and community.
