Networking 101: Best Ways To Start Networking

Friday, February 4, 2022

Networking is one of the most used words in the life of a post-secondary student. Successful networking can often be the difference between a dream career and a survival job.

Here are some ways to improve in your networking journey as you seek career advancements.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is the go-to social platform for professional networking. From job postings, to industry information, company profiles, and everything in between, an account on this platform is a must-have if you are on the lookout for professional connections and job opportunities.

LinkedIn provides you with the opportunity to learn more about industries and organizations that interest you, and connect you with the employers. This is a great way to start making connections with people from companies that you aspire to join. You can also connect with your peers and instructors to expand your network.

Networking Events

Networking events are important if you wish to get in touch with like-minded individuals, most of whom are in the same boat as you, and seek connections to grow. Make sure to arrive early and dress professionally to make a great first impression. These events can help you build and nurture relationships in the long run.

Informational Interviews

Informational interviews are the perfect way to find out more about your networks and gather valuable information – without the jitters of an official meeting. Informational interviews are mostly short coffee meetups but can also be a lunch outing if your connection has the time for it!

The purpose here is not to interview for a particular position at the company, but rather to find out more about the work culture and ethics as well as what the company looks for in a potential employee.

The best way to ask for an informational interview is to be concise in your request, without actually mentioning the words “informational interview.” Start off by using a well thought out subject line, followed by a brief introduction and then proceed with the rest of the details.

Do Your Research

Researching forms a major part of making connections. You need to know the type of companies you want to work for, and then research the people who work for that company. This way, you can filter who you get in touch with and avoid asking for informational interviews from everyone.

Volunteer

Volunteering can do wonders for your career growth. Not only does it look great on your resume, but can also help you gain skills and the opportunity to network with a wider set of people. Your college, university, the local community centre, and local food banks are all great places to start your volunteering journey.
